FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does SVH mean?

SVH stands for: Foundation for Professional Competence in Hospitality.
SVH’s core objective is to increase professional competence in the hospitality industry. Together with partners from hospitality education and business, SVH develops (digital) learning materials and teaching methods for (vocational) education, trainers and entrepreneurs. SVH ensures knowledge by conducting exams and provides insight into the training offerings for the hospitality industry. This way, they help connect hospitality education with business, drive innovation and increase professional competence in the industry. www.svh.nl

Which level is most suitable for me?

SVH Wine 3 is an advanced wine course. You are at the right level if you already have basic knowledge and really want to learn to taste, substantiate, and recognize (instead of “just” learning more facts). If you work in the catering or wine trade and want to advise more professionally, this is usually the right level. If you are an enthusiast, it is especially important that you want to invest time in theory and practice tasting.

Do I need prior knowledge for SVH Wine 3?

It is strongly recommended to start with some basic knowledge. Consider SVH Wine 2 or a similar level. If you have not followed that but you do have practical experience (e.g., in a restaurant/wine trade) and you already know the basic concepts, you can often still join. Do you have doubts? Then it is wise to ask for study advice in advance so that you do not start too high.

Why should I take SVH Wine 3?

Because SVH Wine 3 has a nice balance between theory and practice. You not only learn what something is (regions, grapes, legislation), but especially how to taste wine and objectively assess it. That makes it directly usable in practice: better wine choices, stronger advice to guests/customers, and more certainty in your story.

SVH is an independent organisation and places great value on transparency and reliability. That’s why they have asked the Foundation Examination Board to provide external supervision of all SVH exams.

What does E-learning | Game learning involve?

Game learning, that’s learning through entertainment. By offering information and/or skills in game form, we make learning, discovering and experiencing fun. You stay motivated and the knowledge you gain sticks better and is available in your own time. The E-learning│Game Learning contains a unique learning method. The program is built on knowledge, insight and application. It can, therefore, be quite challenging to answer the questions. We do strongly recommend that you first go through the lessons thoroughly before answering the questions.

What is the difference between SVH, SDEN and WSET?

SVH, SDEN and WSET are not training courses but exam levels from three independent organisations. To obtain the right diploma, you must find a recognised trainer who meets your requirements. Because WSET is the largest organisation for wine education worldwide, it is often mistakenly seen as an internationally recognised training. In terms of content, the training lags behind SVH and SDEN, which both have industry recognition and international appeal.

Theoretical and experimental frameworks.
Theoretical and experimental frameworks apply to both SVH and SDEN exams. For SVH exams, a plus applies, meaning extra content on practical applicability. This additional content relates to everything a hospitality employee needs to know about giving good advice to guests and hobbyists at home about wine and food.

I'm Taking a Training Course, Do I Have to Take an Exam?

No, the exam is not mandatory. You can also take the course to improve your knowledge and tasting skills without exam ambitions. If you want the official SVH Wine 3 diploma, you will take an exam.

Under the heading exams in the main menu you will find the different dates for the official SVH exam. For more information about exams see also SVH.nl

What does the SVH Wine 3 exam look like?

The exam consists of two parts:

Theory (multiple choice)

Tasting (organoleptic exam)
So you show that you have mastered knowledge and that you can assess wine according to a fixed, objective method.

Is SVH Wine 3 necessary to follow Vinologist/Sommelier (level 4)?

At WTOL, the SVH Wine 3 diploma is a prerequisite for admission to SVH Vinologist level 4.
