Are you looking to pursue a sommelier qualification that not only refines your tasting and advisory skills but also awards you a recognised diploma? In WTOL Academy’s SVH Vinologist / Sommelier course, you will train your senses, build in-depth wine knowledge, and master the art of professional food and wine pairings.
During the course, you will taste approximately 400 wines, specifically selected to accelerate your tasting technique and varietal recognition. You will be taught by a team of experienced tutors, including Registered Vinologists. After passing the SVH exam, you are entitled to use the title
of SVH Registered Vinologist/Sommelier (rVS). For the duration of the registration period, the terms and conditions of SVH apply.
In this training you develop a tasting skill that you can build on in the hospitality industry, wine trade or as a serious wine enthusiast with exam ambitions. You learn to objectively assess wines on color, aroma, structure and balance. With professional tasting techniques you will learn to recognize wines increasingly faster.
Themes that you will see in the training:
During a practical day, approximately 25 wines are tasted and discussed. In the morning, the focus is on tasting technique and objective assessment.
In the afternoon, we will cover a specific theme (e.g., region, grape, style, or wine-food pairing).
In addition, there is the Digital Classroom: this allows you to follow live online lessons as a supplement to the practical lessons and the E-learning program.
In addition to the lessons, the training offers plenty of opportunities to gain practical experience. Together with your fellow students, you will participate in tastings, delve into themes and attend masterclasses by renowned wine experts. You learn faster through many wine tastings, discussing and receiving feedback, which is why the training is strongly practice-oriented.
Do you have serious wine ambitions? Then this training is for you.

SVH stands for: Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Hospitality (Foundation for Professional Competence in Hospitality). SVH’s core goal is to increase professional competence in the hospitality industry. Together with partners from hospitality education and the business community, SVH develops (digital) learning materials and teaching methods for (vocational) education, trainers and entrepreneurs. SVH safeguards knowledge by administering exams and provides insight into the range of training programmes available for the hospitality industry. In this way they contribute to bridging the gap between hospitality education and the business world, contribute to innovation and increase professional competence in the sector. www.svh.nl
This page focuses on people who are looking for a sommelier training and people who specifically want to follow a vinologists training.
Sommelier is often a role or function (e.g., in a restaurant or hotel): wine advice, wine list, pairing, guest experience.
Vinoloog is a (in the Netherlands) recognized title/diploma route via SVH.
That’s why many professionals choose the SVH Vinoloog training: you develop sommelier skills, and you work towards a recognized exam/diploma.
This training is intended for:
Hospitality professionals (restaurant, hotel, F&B) who want to give more professional wine advice
Professionals in wine trade/import/retail who want to deepen their knowledge
Ambitious enthusiasts who want to follow a serious program and have exam ambitions
You mainly need motivation and willingness to study. If you already work with wine (hospitality/wine trade), it often connects directly. If you have little basic knowledge, it is important that you reserve time for the theory (E-learning) and actively taste and practice.
Game learning, that’s learning through entertainment. By offering information and/or skills in game form, we make learning, discovering and experiencing fun. You stay motivated and the knowledge you gain sticks better and is available in your own time. The E-learning│Game Learning contains a unique learning method. The program is built on knowledge, insight and application. It can, therefore, be quite challenging to answer the questions. We do strongly recommend that you first go through the lessons thoroughly before answering the questions.
SVH, SDEN and WSET are not training courses but exam levels from three independent organisations. To obtain the right diploma, you must find a recognised trainer who meets your requirements. Because WSET is the largest organisation for wine education worldwide, it is often mistakenly seen as an internationally recognised training. In terms of content, the training lags behind SVH and SDEN, which both have industry recognition and international appeal.
Theoretical and experimental frameworks.
Theoretical and experimental frameworks apply to both SVH and SDEN exams. For SVH exams, a plus applies, meaning extra content on practical applicability. This additional content relates to everything a hospitality employee needs to know about giving good advice to guests and hobbyists at home about wine and food.
No, that is not required!
If you want to obtain the SVH diploma and the associated recognition, it includes an exam. If you mainly want to gain knowledge and skills without an exam, you can (depending on our offer) choose a learning path that suits you. Under the heading exams in the main menu, you will find the different dates for the official SVH exam. For more information about exams, see also SVH.nl
