Social Hygiene is all about working responsibly and safely in an environment where alcohol is served or sold. You will learn which rules apply, how to recognise risky behaviour, and how to act professionally when a situation calls for it.
Find out what the rules are regarding serving and selling alcohol, and what responsibilities these entail.
Learn to recognise the signs of excessive alcohol consumption and know when to intervene or refuse to serve any more.
Gain an understanding of the risks associated with drug use, smoking and gambling, and learn how to deal with these responsibly within a hospitality business.
Learn how to draw up, communicate and enforce clear house rules when guests cross the line.
Learn how to deal professionally with aggression, violence and (sexual) harassment, and discover how to prevent situations from escalating as far as possible.
Learn how to create a safe environment for guests and staff without compromising on hospitality.
No fixed class days or travel time. You’ll have four months’ access to the online learning environment and can decide for yourself where and when to study. Ideal if you want to combine the course with work or irregular shifts in the hospitality industry.
The course combines clear theory with various ways of practising actively:
Allow for around 8 to 12 hours of self-study to complete the course and prepare for the exam.

Managers of hospitality businesses and off-licences subject to the Alcohol Act are required to have sufficient knowledge and understanding of social hygiene. The qualification is therefore essential for many business owners and managers to be able to carry out their duties. The exact requirements that apply to your organisation may depend on the type of business and the licence held.
This course is intended for people who hold positions of responsibility within a business where alcohol is served or sold and who are required or wish to demonstrate their knowledge of social hygiene.
The official SVH Social Hygiene exam is included in this online course. The e-learning programme provides targeted preparation for the exam, with explanations, practice questions and exam simulations.
The computer-based exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and lasts 40 minutes. You will pass if you answer at least 29 questions correctly. Upon successfully completing the official exam, you will be awarded the SVH Diploma in Social Hygiene.

You will follow an online preparatory course (e-learning) to prepare for the official SVH Social Hygiene exam. SVH states that you can take the exam to obtain the SVH Social Hygiene Diploma.
Many businesses that serve or sell alcohol are required by the Licensing Act to meet the Social Hygiene requirement. SVH refers to this as the ‘Statement of Knowledge and Insight into Social Hygiene’. If you are unsure whether this is mandatory in your situation (for instance, in specific paracommercial settings), check your licence or local council requirements, or contact WTOL for advice.
SVH is an independent organisation and places great value on transparency and reliability. That’s why they have asked the Foundation Examination Board to provide external supervision of all SVH exams.
The Foundation Examination Board is an independent institution that supervises professional qualifying and/or function-oriented exams. The Examination Board has conducted various audits and found that the SVH exams meet the requirements.
This way we ensure that the quality of your SVH certificates and diplomas is additionally guaranteed.
Game learning, that’s learning through entertainment. By offering information and/or skills in game form, we make learning, discovering and experiencing fun. You stay motivated and the knowledge you gain sticks better and is available in your own time. The E-learning│Game Learning contains a unique learning method. The program is built on knowledge, insight and application. It can, therefore, be quite challenging to answer the questions. We do strongly recommend that you first go through the lessons thoroughly before answering the questions.
SVH, SDEN and WSET are not training courses but exam levels from three independent organisations. To obtain the right diploma, you must find a recognised trainer who meets your requirements. Because WSET is the largest organisation for wine education worldwide, it is often mistakenly seen as an internationally recognised training. In terms of content, the training lags behind SVH and SDEN, which both have industry recognition and international appeal.
Theoretical and experimental frameworks.
Theoretical and experimental frameworks apply to both SVH and SDEN exams. For SVH exams, a plus applies, meaning extra content on practical applicability. This additional content relates to everything a hospitality employee needs to know about giving good advice to guests and hobbyists at home about wine and food.
You will have 4 months of access to the learning modules. This is usually plenty of time to learn the material and revise in preparation for the exam.
The SVH exam is conducted as a multiple-choice examination (40 questions are typically specified in the exam description).
WTOL can tell you exactly how the scheduling and administration are arranged for your package (as you have indicated that the exam is included).
The e-learning is your preparation. You will obtain the SVH diploma after passing the official exam.
